What this actually does
Three ways, in order of how much they take. “Shrink the pictures” re-encodes the photographs and scans inside the file and touches nothing else — the text stays text, stays selectable and stays searchable; on a six-page document that was mostly one photograph this took it down by 82%. “Tidy the structure” rewrites the file without re-encoding anything, which is completely lossless and, measured honestly, usually saves nothing at all — it is here for a file from a careless producer, not as a general answer. “Redraw every page” turns each page into a picture: the largest saving available and the end of any selectable text. A file already as small as it can be is handed back untouched rather than padded.
